Matija Gubec was a Croatian peasant and rebel leader in the 16th century. He is famous for leading a major peasant revolt in Croatia against the oppressive feudal system and the ruling nobility. Gubec was born in the village of Gornja Stubica, Croatia around the year 1538 and was a serf on the estate of the noble family Erdődy.
In 1573, Gubec joined a group of peasants who were dissatisfied with the harsh living conditions and exploitation by the nobility. He soon became one of the leaders of the rebellion, which was aimed at overthrowing the feudal system and establishing a more just society. The revolt spread quickly across Croatia and the neighboring regions, and Gubec's forces managed to seize several towns and castles.
However, the rebellion was short-lived and was crushed by the combined forces of the nobility and the Habsburg Empire. Gubec was captured and executed in 1573, along with several other rebel leaders.
Today, Matija Gubec is seen as a symbol of resistance against oppressive rulers and a champion of social justice. His legacy is celebrated in Croatia through various cultural events and monuments, including the annual Gubec Days festival in Gornja Stubica.
